Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe Vs. Pre-packaged Taco Seasoning

If your family is anything like mine then tacos are a go to crowd pleasing meal just about any night of the week.  I have used the pre-packaged seasoning for years but after taking a look at the ingredients one day I thought maybe we would just start making our own.  Let’s take a look…

  • Maltodextrin –  Maltodextrin is a white powder often used in processed foods as a filler as well as in pharmaceuticals as a binding agent.   It is not bad for you but it has no health benefit and considering it is #1 on the list then you can assume there is a lot of it in there.  Gluten allergy beware.
  • Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil – a.k.a. trans fat – just avoid it.  Soy allergy beware.
  • Silicon Dioxide – This is basically the equivalent of sand.  You don’t eat it at the beach so don’t put it on your taco :)
  • Ethoxyquin – Ethoxyquin is a quinoline-based antioxidant used as a food preservative and a pesticide. It is commonly used as a preservative in pet foods AND pre-packaged taco seasoning (among many other foods).  I am not feeling too good about this one.

All that being said, you can easily make Homemade Taco Seasoning in just a few minutes with ingredients you can pronounce, much less salt and way more flavor.

Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe

So here is my recipe below.  I do not add the red pepper flakes just because I don’t want to set my children’s mouths on fire – you could even sprinkle in just a little cayenne pepper if you want to add just a little extra spice.   If you are wondering about cost, you can purchase most of the ingredients for about $1 each.  If you do not have any of these items in your spice cabinet then you are looking at about a $10 investment which will yield several batches.

Ingredients

  • Small Batch
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Large Batch
  • ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2.5 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2.5 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2.5 teaspoons red pepper flakes
  • 2.5 teaspoons oregano
  • 5 teaspoons paprika
  • ¼ cup plus 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons salt
  • 3 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon finely ground pepper

Instructions

  1. This small batch yields about 3 TBL. The large batch yields about 2 cups. If you make the large batch then make sure to store in an airtight container and store in a cool, dry place.
  2. Combine 2-3 TBL with 1/2 cup of water to 1 pound of cooked meat of your choice. Simmer until most of the water is gone.
