Homemade Silly Putty Recipe With Liquid Starch

Homemade Silly Putty

Want to keep the kiddos entertained for a few hours (possibly days)?  Then Homemade Silly Putty is your answer!   I shared a recipe last year (see it here) that used Borax but it seems to only work if you have the right glue (Crazy Art Glue).  We tried it again at my daughter’s birthday with Elmer’s Glue and it didn’t quite turn out the same.

This time we used liquid starch and VIOLA! it turned out great and was a lot easier then using Borax.  As you can see we made a rainbow of colors :)

Empty the contents of the bottle of glue into a bowl.  After you have squeezed out all you can, fill the bottle about half way up with warm water and shake to get the glue off the sides of the bottle.  Pour the water and add your food coloring to the bowl.   Stir until the color is thoroughly mixed.

Slowly mix in 1/4 cup of liquid starch.  I poured while my girls stirred.  The mixture will immediately start to become fibrous and thick. After a few minutes you (or your kids) will have to forgo the stirring device and use your hands.  Continue to work with your hands for 5-10 minutes.

When using your hands be prepared for it being extremely sticky.  Do not put it down and go wash hands, keep on working with it and it will soon become more like dough and it will come off your hands while you are working.  After it has come off your hands you want to put it in a container and let it sit for about 10 minutes – I’m not sure what is going on in that 10 minutes but it seems to make a difference.   We bought a 4pk of plastic containers at the Dollar Tree and use those to store it in – I would not suggest using a plastic bag.

So there you have it!  Homemade silly putty is a quick, cheap and fun activity to do with the kiddos and it will keep them entertained for hours!  You do want to stress to your children to not get this on fabric or in their hair – it will wash out but it takes a LOT of soaking.  If you want to give this a try then Pin this Homemade Silly Putty Recipe here.
